4 DNA Testing - What is DNA?
DNA is an abbreviation for Deoxyribonucleic Acid. Each DNA strand is 10 atoms wide.
A DNA molecule consists of a twisted spiral called a double helix. DNA is found inside genes,
inside chromosomes and inside the nucleus of a cell. Each chromosome is made up of a tightly
coiled strand, a molecule of DNA.
Both the egg and sperm hold DNA. Each child receives 23 chromosomes from its mother and
23 from its father. Every cell except for the red blood cell carries a blueprint of DNA.
The length of the strand is called a gene.
DNA Parentage Testing
Through looking at the DNA, it is possible to establish parentage. Testing is based on
a highly accurate analysis of the genetic profiles of the mother, child and alleged father.
DNA, the unique genetic blueprint within each nucleated cell in the body, determines a person's
genetic pattern and individual characteristics. A child inherits half of the DNA pattern from
the mother and half from the father. If the mother's and child's patterns are known, the father's
can be deduced with virtual certainty.
Who can use DNA Parentage Testing?

- Someone wanting peace of mind.
- A woman seeking child support from a man who denies he is the child's father.
- A person attempting to win visitation or custody.
- A parent going through a divorce.
